Ignition Interlock for Columbus and Delaware, Ohio DUI / OVI Cases

DUI / OVI cases have a variety of potential penalties that can be imposed. In addition to potential jail time and fines, the judge may require that an ignition interlock be installed in your vehicle. This device measures the alcohol in your breath and requires you to blow into the device before the vehicle can be started.

The data gathered by the ignition interlock device is transmitted to a database. The data is then made available to the court, which allows court officials to determine if there has been a violation.

Limited driving privileges may be conditioned on using the ignition interlock device. For a first time DUI / OVI offense, the use of this device is optional. The judge may or may not require its use. However, for repeat offenders, the ignition interlock device is mandatory. It may also be required as a condition to the granting of limited driving privileges under an administrative license suspension.

If an ignition interlock device is ordered by the court, you will be required to pay an installation fee and a monthly rental fee. Before limited driving privileges are granted, proof of the installation of the device must be presented to the court.

What is an Ignition Interlock?

An ignition interlock is a breathalyzer device installed into your vehicle that is connected to your vehicle’s ignition system. In order to start the vehicle, you must blow into the breathalyzer. If the breathalyzer registers any alcohol on your breath, the vehicle will not start. If you have an interlock device in your vehicle and the device detects the presence of alcohol, your results will be sent to your probation officer or pre-trial services coordinator.

How Much Does an Ignition Interlock Device Cost in Ohio?

The device usually costs $100-$200 per month. However, there is an additional fee of $200-$300 to install the device.

Ignition Interlock Violations

If an offender operates the vehicle without the ignition interlock device, attempts to tamper or bypass the device, or operates the vehicle with a prohibited amount of alcohol in their breath, the court may terminate use of the device. The court then may terminate the limited driving privileges and order the use of a Secure Remote Alcohol Monitoring Device (SCRAM). Additionally, the court may terminate your bond if use of the ignition interlock was a condition of your bond.
