Yellow License Plates for DUI/OVI Convictions in Columbus and Delaware, Ohio
As part of a DUI/OVI sentence in Columbus and Delaware, Ohio, the judge may require that the offender have yellow license plates. These are referred to as “restricted license plates.” These can be optional or mandatory, depending upon the sentence, but are required for most DUI/OVI offenses. Upon requesting driving privileges, restricted plates will almost certainly be required:
- For a first time DUI/OVI offense, the judge may require that restricted license plates be used as a condition of granting limited driving privileges.
- For a first time DUI/OVI offense that involved a high test, the judge is required to mandate restricted license plates as a condition of granting limited driving privileges.
- For a second DUI/OVI offense within 6 years, the judge is required to order restricted license plates as part of granting limited driving privileges.
- If you are placed under an administrative license suspension, a judge may order restricted plates as a condition of granting limited driving privileges.
Process of Obtaining Yellow License Plates
If the judge requires the use of restricted license plates, you must complete an “application for registration of a motor vehicle with restricted plates” and have that application approved by the judge. Once approved, the application needs to be taken to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. You will surrender your current license plates and purchase the restricted license plates. These restricted license plates must remain on your vehicle for the duration of the license suspension.
Consequences of Having Yellow License Plates
There are a few things that you need to keep in mind regarding restricted license plates. If you do not plan on driving while your driver’s license is suspended, there is no need for restricted license plates. If you do obtain restricted license plates, be aware that anyone driving the vehicle (e.g., spouse or family member) will likely be closely monitored by law enforcement while driving and pulled over for the slightest infraction. It may also make you a target by other motorists.
